The Folx Collective and uSpark, in collaboration with Splash Fresno, recognize the power of the Queer community in political elections. Together, we created a safe space to discuss the political platforms of each candidate ahead of the 2024 November 5th election. On Tuesday September 10th, we hosted a nonpartisan debate watch party and invited the public to attend.

LGBTQ+ voters are projected to grow significantly in the coming years, with 1 in 7 voters identifying as LGBTQ+ by 2030, and nearly 1 in 5 by 2040. This surge will have a major impact on local, state, and federal elections, potentially shifting the political landscape across the country. Younger generations, especially Gen Z, are leading this growth. -Equality Electorate: The projected growth of the lgbtq+ voting bloc in coming years

Around 100 people gathered for the presidential debate watch party featuring Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump. The evening was filled with a range of reactions, as attendees expressed both shock and amusement while the candidates addressed the nation.

The event was hosted by D'Aungillique Jackson and Shaq Michelle, both Fresno residents and are also active in the LGBTQ + community.

"LGBTQ clubs have been the most visibly safe institutions for our community for decades. Hosting civic engagement based events at a venue like Splash Fresno is important because it creates a safe space for people who may not be used to talking about politics to engage in honest dialogue,"said D'Aungillique Jackson.

Following the presidential debate, attendees engaged in a lively post-debate discussion. Topics included climate change, abortion, student loans, and down-ballot voting. Many participants expressed a preference for experiencing the event with their community rather than alone at home.

"Hosting an event like this is essential because Splash is a melting pot of many different folks from all walks of life. I thought it was beautiful seeing how involved and interested the queer community of Fresno can be! It's our job to know what's going on in this world to gain the motion towards a progressive future for all," said Shaq Michelle.

The next event will be the vice presidential debate between candidates Governor Tim Walz and Senator JD Vance.
